I’m not going to lie, there are a few castles kicking about up here, but this one is quite special. A perfect day for a wander from Stonehaven Harbour up the coastal path to the castle and back. Take a detour to Black Hill war memorial on route and enjoy the views. Its about 4 miles and quite steep in places and once you get to the castle there are about 200 steps, so not buggy friendly unless you have arms of steel. Its quite exposed on the rugged path so you need a dry day unless you like a soggy walk as there is no shelter from the rain. Merida’s DunBroch family castle in the Pixar film Brave took inspiration from here. Dunnottar also was used as a location in Hamlet and Victor Frankenstein.
We like it as its a great walk, you can explore the wee beach, visit the castle and get a Jaffa cake Rizza’s ice-cream on the way back at the Harbour Hut
These lot are part-timers when it comes to walks…
